LIMINAL

Created alongside the artist’s very first work of film, these monotypes respond to the starkly beautiful environment of summer in Kvalnes, on the edge of the Arctic circle. They are intuitive, almost musical notations on a place where visual motifs are precious and few, thanks to the austerity imposed by visceral Arctic winters. Distilled through ever-thinner veils of ink, flower buds reach for the brief glow of summer, before desiccating in the bitter cold; shimmering lines suggest refracted light and sound on sun kissed saltwater; fallen crosses in a churchyard tell of both embedded community and long abandonment. These works express the special intimacies of stillness in a remote, unpeopled landscape. Golden and dreamlike, they honour fleeting moments of summer beauty and lightness of thought, before the inevitable descent of Norway’s dark winter months.
